“They say you’ve been the Yellow Cat’s constant battle companion since basic training,” one of the Mechanic-Squires said daringly to Oomla.
“Mm,” Oomla said, sipping soup, not encouraging but neither particularly offputting.
“Does her contract require a fresh helmet for every sortie because it’s lucky?” Wide eyes implored her for truths. Or tales, anyway. “Is it like the ancient fable? The musician asking for mixed sweets with a colour picked out, as a shrewd way of assessing the attention to detail of the house? Is she so fierce her helm is sundered every time?”
“She gives a lot of those noble, rabble-rousing speeches,” Oomla said dryly. “Takes her helmet off, stands on a rock or something, speechifies, rides to battle at the head of a newly-fired army. Remembers an hour later that she’s left it sitting in a puddle or dangling from a street sign. It just got to be the easiest way to make sure she always had another.”
