“Vampires are optically weird. Everybody knows that vampires are — the whole mirrors thing, right?” Rose widens her eyes earnestly to enphasise what she’s saying. “The Transylvanian Outreach Committee did some fascinating experiments in the 70s, actually, with beam splitters and lasers and holograms and there’s a whole class of theoretical quantum device you could only build with a vampire in the middle for photons to conditionally interact with — look, the point is—”
“You’re sparkly.”
“The point is—”
“Sparkly like—”
“One more word out of you and I will muzzle you,” Rose says, and Rieka smiles, dawn-slow and mischief-bright, at getting the rise she wanted out of her.
“Oh, will you?” she says in a tone of innocent interest, chin hammocked in her hands.
Rose curls her lip, just enough for a sharp point to show. “Don’t encourage me to think you need training,” she warns.
