Sideways Baron

Cohost writing prompt: @Making-up-Demons — Demon who keeps having to kill adventurers because someone started calling them the Demon King, but they're like a Baron at best

"Look, I just don't know if this is a client rebranding we can tackle, you know?" Kim says, fiddling with her smartwatch. "I mean, what, are we going to take out billboards? 'Sure I'm a demon, but stop calling me King'?"

Jeff pouts over his cappucino. "I still don't understand the brief," he complains, waving at the sinister-looking parchment unrolled in the middle of the conference room table.

"People keep confusing the client for a Demon King," Ben says, fingers steepled. "The infernal peerage system is intentionally convoluted to minimise this, but there are lots of prophecies, and apparently just, like, random callouts that people take for prophecies, which tend to concentrate on the, like, the charismatic megafauna of demon titles — General, King, Overlord, right? So there's a whole thing where getting your political enemies granted title as Demon King is a backhanded way of getting rid of them, because people with magic swords start showing up to stab them about it. Our guy is—" Ben checks his iPad — "a Sideways Baronet-Extraordinary? Unless we're having translation problems again. I dunno. But apparently somebody Earthside named him as a Demon King is some kind of modern internet grimoire, and he's started attracting the wrong demographic."

"But what are we supposed to do about that?" Dave says. "Take out billboards saying 'Stop calling me a Demon King'?"

"Great point, Dave," Jeff says.

Eric sits forward, leaning on the table. "What if," he says, "we get Stanley to talk to his client on the cereal campaign? New villain for their mascot to defeat, always trying to steal the Corn Blobs?" He sweeps his hand through the air, miming a chyron. "The Sideways Baron. Nobody memorises weird details like kids. You can hear it now, yeah? Somebody calls him a Demon King, and this little impatient voice goes Da-aaaaad, he's a BARON—"
